Seismicity at the Castor gas reservoir, offshore Spain, was controlled by pore pressure diffusion and the failure of loaded asperities on a shallow fault
An international team led by scientists at GFZ Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, in collaboration with colleagues by Spanish, Italian and US institutions, where collaborates Estefania Blanch from the department of Physics of the EPSEB, is publishing a new scientific work on induced seismicity in Europe in the Journal Nature Communications.

Sergi Mas-Pujol defends his thesis on the management of imbalances between demand and air capacity using deep learning techniques
Sergi Mas-Pujol defended his thesis co-supervised by Dra. Esther Salamí and Dr. Enric Pastor on May 12, 2023 at the Baix Llobregat Campus. Entitled "Deep Learning techniques for Demand-Capacity Balancing", the thesis studies the use of artificial intelligence techniques to improve the detection of air regulations and how to smooth traffic in periods of high demand, proposing different models that have takes into account the needs of the main parties involved (network management entity and airlines) and a reinforcement learning model based on the use of images.

Study of the effects of rotation in hydrodynamic models of accretion on compact stars
David Martin Rodriguez defended his thesis supervised by Jordi José on July 7, 2023 at the Diagonal-Besòs Campus. Entitled "Hydrodynamic Models of Accretion onto Rotating Compact Stars", the thesis focuses on investigating the effects of rotation and the instabilities caused by it (meridional circulation and turbulence due to differential rotation) in type I X-ray eruptions ( or type I X-Ray Bursts), which take place on the surface of accreting neutron stars. In particular, the study focuses on the study of the observable properties (light curves, recurrence periods and nucleosynthesis) of these eruptions

Study of the movement and collective behavior of fish, robots and bees
Julia Múgica Gallart defended her thesis co-directed by Romualdo Pastor-Satorras and M. Carmen Miguel López on June 7, 2023 at the North Campus. Entitled "Collective Motion and Collective Decision-Making in Animal Groups: From Schooling Fish to Swarming Robots" the thesis focuses on empirically and theoretically investigating collective movement in shoals of fish, and collective decision-making in a swarm of robots emulating the selection of a new nesting site for bees.

Teng Wang defends his thesis on self-adjusting and linearization techniques based on digital predistortion for communications in UAVs.
Teng Wang defended his thesis titled "A Fasto Engineering Approach High Efficiency Power Amplifier Linearization for Avionics Applications" on December 17 at EETAC, directed by Pere L. Gilabert (TSC-UPC). The thesis provides some guidelines for the design of linearizers based on digital predistortion (DPD) from several perspectives: y) improve the performance of open-loop DPD, ii) provide robustness and reduce the computational complexity of the parameter identification subsystem and, iii ) incorporation of machine learning techniques to favor the auto-tuning of power amplifiers and DPD linearizers with various degrees of freedom to be able to maximize energy efficiency while meeting linearity specifications.

The analysis of a meteorite reveals secrets about the birth of the solar system
An international team of cosmochemists and astrophysicists, which includes Jordi José, a researcher from the Physics Department of the UPC and the Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya (IEEC), has discovered a meteorite grain forged during the final phases of a star disappeared a long time ago. Encapsulated in a meteorite collected in Antarctica, the tiny grain - only a few microns in size - has shed new light on the terminal phases of star life and how they sow the universe with the building blocks of new stars, planets and life.

The e-ROSITA X-ray observatory detects for the first time the 'fireball' of a stellar explosion
A research team led by the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) and of which Glòria Sala, a researcher at the UPC Astronomy and Astrophysics Group and the Institute for Space Studies of Catalonia (IEEC), is a member, has been able to observe, for the first time, an explosion of X-ray light. The study is featured on the cover of the journal Nature.

The new research on intrinsic correlation between the fraction of liquid-like zones and the beta-relaxation in high-entropy metallic glasses
Researchers Y. J. Duan, E. Pineda and D. Crespo, from the Group of Materials Characterization of the UPC, have made new progress to understand the mechanical properties of high-entropy metallic glasses. The work clarifies the correlation between the fraction of liquid-like zones, i.e. the fraction of atoms that can easily rearrange under the effect of external forces, and the secondary or β relaxation observed in these materials. Besides, the work reveals the high-entropy effect on the supercooled liquid dynamics of the metallic melt.
