David Arcos' thesis takes a step further in the characterization of two-dimensional materials
On Tuesday 19 July, doctoral student David Arcos Gutiérrez defended his thesis entitled Optoelectronic characterization of two-dimensional materials at high frequencies, which was co-directed by Núria Ferrer Anglada and Lluís Ametller Congost. In the thesis, non-destructive characterization methods are analyzed, applied and compared at frequencies above 1 GHz, which are used to characterize samples of 2D materials on different substrates. The optoelectronic properties of two heterostructures are also measured. (graphene / MoS2 and graphene / WS2 on molten quartz) and are compared with those of individual materials

Viktor Cikojević defended his thesis on the study of ultracold atomic mixtures
Viktor Cikojević defended his thesis co-directed by Leandra Vranješ Markić and Jordi Boronat on April 20th 2021 at Campus Diagonal Nord, titled "Ab-initio Quantum Monte Carlo study of ultracold atomic mixtures". The thesis presents a systematic study of self-bound quantum droplets in a Bose-Bose mixture, employing techniques of Quantum Monte Carlo and Density Functional Theory.

Heat can freeze fluids in the quantum world
An international collaboration between researchers from Denmark, Spain and Austria, which includes the postdoctoral researcher at UPC, Juan Sánchez Baena, as first author, shows that heating does not always melt a solid material. Their discovery reveals how increasing the temperature of an ultracold quantum fluid can trigger its phase transition to a solid state.

PhD work about the application of the modeling of turbulent combustion in model aero-engine burners
Ambrus Both defended his thesis co-supervised by Daniel Mira and Oriol Lehmkuhl on June 29th at the Campus Nord of UPC. Titled "High-fidelity numerical simulations of reacting flows with tabulated chemistry," the thesis presents a framework of tabulated chemistry methods for the modeling of turbulent combustion and its application in model aero-engine burners.

Study of the effects of rotation in hydrodynamic models of accretion on compact stars
David Martin Rodriguez defended his thesis supervised by Jordi José on July 7, 2023 at the Diagonal-Besòs Campus. Entitled "Hydrodynamic Models of Accretion onto Rotating Compact Stars", the thesis focuses on investigating the effects of rotation and the instabilities caused by it (meridional circulation and turbulence due to differential rotation) in type I X-ray eruptions ( or type I X-Ray Bursts), which take place on the surface of accreting neutron stars. In particular, the study focuses on the study of the observable properties (light curves, recurrence periods and nucleosynthesis) of these eruptions

Unmasking the microscopic fingerprint in finite-temperature features of a one-dimensional Bose gas
A team of researchers from UPC in Barcelona and EPFL in Lausanne built a new theory to explain the finite-temperature properties in terms of microscopic excitations of bosons in one dimension

David Pino coordinates the creation of the most complete catalog of floods in the peninsular Mediterranean slope over a thousand years
The 'MEDIFLOOD' project, coordinated by the department, has created the first archive that compiles, identifies and analyzes 14,500 cases of rain and river flooding in the Spanish Mediterranean watershed in a period of almost a millennium. The information provided by this catalog will allow to increase the forecast capacity of extreme weather events in order to design the most effective adaptation and response actions.

Pablo Amil creates the first tomography map for diagnosing glaucoma
The researcher from the Physics department has created an objective model that classifies the degrees of the iridocorneal angle, a key element for assessing the severity of glaucoma. With this model, ophthalmologists will have a tool to help patients make a decision when considering surgery.
