Fading of the polaron in a gas of bosons due to temperature effect
PhD student Gerard Pascual and professor Jordi Boronat of the research group Approaches to the first principles in condensed matter physics: quantum effects and complexity; have published a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters, where it is theoretically described how a polaron, the result of the interaction of an impurity with a gas of bosons in the condensation phase, disappears due to the effect of temperature

New physical mechanism for the formation of transverse finger bars in beaches with abundant supply of sand
Albert Falqués and Francesca Ribas, from the group of Nonlinear fluid dynamics of the Physics Department, together with two other researchers from the UPC, have discovered a new morphodynamic instability mechanism that can explain the formation of alongshore-rhythmic systems of transverse finger bars that often develop at beaches with an abundant supply of sand, like those at El Trabucador beach, in the Ebro delta

The new research on intrinsic correlation between the fraction of liquid-like zones and the beta-relaxation in high-entropy metallic glasses
Researchers Y. J. Duan, E. Pineda and D. Crespo, from the Group of Materials Characterization of the UPC, have made new progress to understand the mechanical properties of high-entropy metallic glasses. The work clarifies the correlation between the fraction of liquid-like zones, i.e. the fraction of atoms that can easily rearrange under the effect of external forces, and the secondary or β relaxation observed in these materials. Besides, the work reveals the high-entropy effect on the supercooled liquid dynamics of the metallic melt.

Innovative methods for selectively fragmenting molecules with laser X-rays are proposed
Carles Serrat Jurado, a professor in the Department of Physics at the UPC, has demonstrated in research that the interior of a molecule can be modified locally and selectively by applying hard X-ray lasers. The work has been published in the reference scientific journal 'The Journal of Physical Chemistry'

Hadrien Calmet defends his thesis on fluid dynamics during a short and rapid inhalation (also called sniff) in the airways
Hadrien Calmet will defend his thesis directed by Dr. Guillaume Houzeaux and tutored by Dr. Daniel Calvete at the campus nord. Titled “Large-scale CFD and micro-particle simulations in a large human airways under sniff condition and drug delivery application,” the thesis presents results that set a precedent for large-scale airway simulations and provide a better understanding of the mechanisms. physiological

Discovery of a neutron star that behaves like a black hole
An international scientific team, in which Yuri Cavecchi, from the physics department of the UPC has participated, and led by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), has found a neutron star that steals matter from a companion star in a violent and unstable. This process, previously only observed in black holes. The study is published in the journal Nature.
