Researchers design light-powered nano-swimmers
A team of researchers made up of professors from the UPC Physics department, from the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, University of Barcelona, ​​and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, have designed the theoretical prototype of a nano-swimmer that could drive directionally with light.

Pablo Amil defends his thesis on medical image analysis using artificial intelligence
Pablo Amil defended his doctoral thesis supervised by Cristina Masoller, in the ETSIAAT in Terrassa on February 11, 2020. Titled "Machine learning methods for the characterization and classification of complex data", the thesis presents several automatic learning methods focused particularly on the analysis of ophthalmological images, and complex data in general. The new research on intrinsic correlation between the fraction of liquid-like zones and the beta-relaxation in high-entropy metallic glasses
Researchers Y. J. Duan, E. Pineda and D. Crespo, from the Group of Materials Characterization of the UPC, have made new progress to understand the mechanical properties of high-entropy metallic glasses. The work clarifies the correlation between the fraction of liquid-like zones, i.e. the fraction of atoms that can easily rearrange under the effect of external forces, and the secondary or β relaxation observed in these materials. Besides, the work reveals the high-entropy effect on the supercooled liquid dynamics of the metallic melt.

Innovative methods for selectively fragmenting molecules with laser X-rays are proposed
Carles Serrat Jurado, a professor in the Department of Physics at the UPC, has demonstrated in research that the interior of a molecule can be modified locally and selectively by applying hard X-ray lasers.
