Haixia Lyu defends his thesis on contributions to ionospheric modeling with GNSS in the mapping function, tomography and characteristics of polar electronic content
Haixia Lyu telematically defended her thesis supervised by Professor Manuel Hernández-Pajares on November 17, 2020, entitled "Contributions to ionospheric modeling with GNSS in the mapping function, tomography and characteristics of polar electronic content." The thesis focuses on determining the vertical distribution of low- and high-resolution electron content from data from global positioning systems, GNSS (such as the American GPS) taken from terrestrial receivers and aboard orbiting satellites. low, and to improve knowledge of the climatology of the ionosphere in the polar and mid-latitude northern regions

Heat can freeze fluids in the quantum world
An international collaboration between researchers from Denmark, Spain and Austria, which includes the postdoctoral researcher at UPC, Juan Sánchez Baena, as first author, shows that heating does not always melt a solid material. Their discovery reveals how increasing the temperature of an ultracold quantum fluid can trigger its phase transition to a solid state.

Hossameldin Mohamed Selim Mohamed Selim presents his thesis on 3D reconstruction of defects using a non-destructive testing method based on laser-induced ultrasound
Hossameldin will present his thesis co-directed by Crina Cojocaru (Dept. of Physics) and Miguel Delgado prieto (Dept. of Electronic Engineering), on July 21 at the Terrassa Campus. Entitled "Hybrid non-destructive technique for volumetric defect analysis and reconstruction by remote laser induced ultrasound", the thesis is on the design, study and implementation of a non-destructive non-destructive testing (NDT) method. for the analysis of metallic objects containing internal defects or fractures. An opto-acoustic hybrid technique is proposed that combines ultrasound generated by laser impact as an exciter and ultrasound transducers as receivers.

Identified a plastic crystal useful as an ecological cooler in refrigerators and air conditioners
Researchers from the physics department together with the University of Cambridge and the University of Barcelona have identified a solid material, respectful with the environment, which could replace the hydrofluorocarbon gases (HFC) and hydrocarbons (HC) -highly contaminants and flammable- that are used currently in most refrigerators, air conditioners and cooling systems

Important results published on a molecular mechanism that causes a type of serious cardiac arrhythmia
Blas Echebarria and Enric Àlvarez, researchers in the Physics department of the research group in Computational Biology and Complex Systems (BIOCOM-SC), together with researchers from the Heart Rate Analysis and Control (ANCORA) research group at the UPC, and other international scientists have identified one of the molecular mechanisms responsible for cardiac alternation. This is an alteration of the heart rhythm that facilitates the induction of ventricular fibrillation, a potentially lethal type of arrhythmia. This discovery, published in the journal Circulation Research (AHA Jounals), opens the door to new pharmacological treatments.

Innovative methods for selectively fragmenting molecules with laser X-rays are proposed
Carles Serrat Jurado, a professor in the Department of Physics at the UPC, has demonstrated in research that the interior of a molecule can be modified locally and selectively by applying hard X-ray lasers. The work has been published in the reference scientific journal 'The Journal of Physical Chemistry'
