The Generalitat de Catalunya awards a Josep Trueta plaque to the Computational Biology and Complex Systems research group

The Computational Biology and Complex Systems (BIOCOM-SC) research group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) will receive the Josep Trueta Medal to outstanding professionals and entities in the field of health, on February 22.

The Josep Trueta Medal and plaque is a recognition given by the Generalitat de Catalunya to outstanding professionals and organizations in the field of health. In its 2023 edition, the Computational Biology and Complex Systems (BIOCOM-SC) research group of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC) was recognized, and other groups in the health sector.

The BIOCOM-SC research group is made up of researchers with a background in physics and mathematics, who work in areas ranging from biophysics and nonlinear dynamics to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics or fluid mechanics. This diversity makes it possible to address problems related to complex systems, mainly in areas specific to biology and biomedicine, from a multidisciplinary perspective and in collaboration with specialists from different fields.

In particular, the tools developed by the researchers were used extensively during the COVID-19 pandemic. The BIOCOM-SC research group has studied the data on those infected by COVID-19 and made predictions about their behavior in Catalonia and Europe.
