Today's winners have been announced with the Nobel Prize in Physics 2017.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded Rainer Weiss, Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne for their decisive contributions to the development of the LIGO detector and the discovery of gravitational waves. The three researchers had previously been awarded several prizes, among others the Princess of Asturias for Research. In addition, Professor Thorn received an honorary doctorate from the UPC, at a ceremony that took place last May. Unfortunately, our beloved partner, Enrique Garcia-Berro, the driving force behind the nomination of Thorne to the UPC award, is not among us to celebrate this moment of joy.
