Aeronautical Engineer in UPC leads finding on accurate description of key aerospatial cooling prototype
The computational research, lead by Arnau Miró, professor in the Aerospace Engineering Division of the Physics Department and a member of the TUAREG research group, has been published in the International Journal of Thermal Sciences in collaboration with the CASE department in the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. As Arnau Miró says, he is focused on understanding “how to cool future stuff using Synthetic Jets” with a special focus on synthetic jet actuators.

Quantum mechanics explains how superfluid helium films grow in carbon nanotubes
A study by an international team of researchers, led by ICFO scientists and with the participation of Jordi Boronat, a researcher from the Physics Department of the UPC, shows the controlled growth process of superfluid helium, layer by layer, in the surface of carbon nanotubes. The experiment opens the door to studying new phenomena at the nanoscale and, specifically, in transitions of topological phases.

Are dislocations in solid helium “supersolid”?
A team of researchers from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Brazil) and Stanford University (USA) performed advanced quantum atomistic simulations to assess the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction of solid helium at zero temperature containing dislocations, a defective system that previously had been proposed to be “supersolid”

Jonathan Fernando Gebbia defends his thesis on the study of the low-temperature anomalies of glasses existing in molecular crystals
Jonathan Fernando Gebbia defended his thesis co-directed by Josep Lluís Tamarit and Michela Romanini on October 6th at the Besòs campus (EEBE). Titled "Emerging glassy properties in molecular crystals", the thesis presents the study of low temperature anomalies of glasses found in different molecular crystals by means of low temperature calorimetry, inelastic neutron scattering, and simulations based on ab-initio DFT

Hossameldin Mohamed Selim Mohamed Selim presents his thesis on 3D reconstruction of defects using a non-destructive testing method based on laser-induced ultrasound
Hossameldin will present his thesis co-directed by Crina Cojocaru (Dept. of Physics) and Miguel Delgado prieto (Dept. of Electronic Engineering), on July 21 at the Terrassa Campus. Entitled "Hybrid non-destructive technique for volumetric defect analysis and reconstruction by remote laser induced ultrasound", the thesis is on the design, study and implementation of a non-destructive non-destructive testing (NDT) method. for the analysis of metallic objects containing internal defects or fractures. An opto-acoustic hybrid technique is proposed that combines ultrasound generated by laser impact as an exciter and ultrasound transducers as receivers.

An international team of physicists carry out quantum simulation of the physical effects of disorder in topological insulators
A team of researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the United States, the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and the UPC uses experiments with ultra-cold atoms, trapped and driven by lasers, to create a new topological insulator induced by the disorder.

Marc Melgosa is defending his thesis on air traffic flow and capacity management
Marc Melgosa defended his thesis co-supervised by Dr. Xavier Prats and Dr. Andrija Vidosavljevic on March 22, 2023 at the Baix Llobregat Campus. Entitled "Enhanced Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management under Trajectory Based Operations considering traffic Complexity", the thesis presents a new operational concept that integrates demand and capacity management in the same optimization problem, uses complexity metrics (in instead of the number of arrivals) to measure traffic and takes into account airspace user preferences allowing the possibility of using alternative trajectories to avoid airspace congestion

Identified a plastic crystal useful as an ecological cooler in refrigerators and air conditioners
Researchers from the physics department together with the University of Cambridge and the University of Barcelona have identified a solid material, respectful with the environment, which could replace the hydrofluorocarbon gases (HFC) and hydrocarbons (HC) -highly contaminants and flammable- that are used currently in most refrigerators, air conditioners and cooling systems
