Clara Prats and Martí Català of the BIOCOM-SC research group study the effect of tuberculosis on human evolution
A new multidisciplinary study, with a team from the Physics Department of the UPC and the IGTP-CMCiB, uses mathematical modeling to provide new information on how the origin of tuberculosis has affected population growth and female resistance to infection. The study, published in Scientific Reports, describes mechanisms through which tuberculosis infection has contributed to shaping human society as we know it.

Clara Prats and Nura Ahmad rely on mathematical models to improve tuberculosis control in Nigeria
Researchers from the Department of Physics of the Higher School of Agriculture of Barcelona (ESAB), design a pilot plan to improve the diagnosis and control of tuberculosis in the city of Gombe, located northeast of Nigeria. The project has received funding in the last call for aid from the Center for Development Cooperation (CCD) of the UPC.

Computational study of the transitional coherent structures in shear and centrifugally driven flows
Baoying Wang defended her thesis co-supervised by Alvaro Meseguer and Fernando Mellibovsky on September 21 at the North Campus. Entitled "Transitional Coherent Structures in Shear and Centrifugally Driven Flows", the thesis computationally presents the mechanisms for creating coherent structures (invariants of the Navier-Stokes equations) pre-turbulent in rotating and/or shearing fluids.

Entitled "Contributions to real-time monitoring of the ionosphere using GNSS signals", the thesis presents the set of algorithms implemented in real time to be able to model the ionosphere and offer high-precision corrections to GNSS users

Dani Mulas defends his thesis directed by Maria Amor Duch and Antonia Camacho on February 28 at the UPC South Campus (ETSEIB building). Titled "Levels and behavior of radionuclides in water treatment plants: The case of the Barcelona metropolitan area urban water cycle", the thesis presents data on the presence of radionuclides in water treatment plants as well as the application to sewage samples of analysis techniques to know the most significant chemical fractionation of the radionuclide, I-131, and its modeling of effluent levels

David Arcos' thesis takes a step further in the characterization of two-dimensional materials
On Tuesday 19 July, doctoral student David Arcos Gutiérrez defended his thesis entitled Optoelectronic characterization of two-dimensional materials at high frequencies, which was co-directed by Núria Ferrer Anglada and Lluís Ametller Congost. In the thesis, non-destructive characterization methods are analyzed, applied and compared at frequencies above 1 GHz, which are used to characterize samples of 2D materials on different substrates. The optoelectronic properties of two heterostructures are also measured. (graphene / MoS2 and graphene / WS2 on molten quartz) and are compared with those of individual materials

David Pino coordinates the creation of the most complete catalog of floods in the peninsular Mediterranean slope over a thousand years
The 'MEDIFLOOD' project, coordinated by the department, has created the first archive that compiles, identifies and analyzes 14,500 cases of rain and river flooding in the Spanish Mediterranean watershed in a period of almost a millennium. The information provided by this catalog will allow to increase the forecast capacity of extreme weather events in order to design the most effective adaptation and response actions.

Department researchers lead rain data analysis from two centuries ago in Catalonia
M. Carmen Casas, Raúl Rodríguez and Alba Llabrés collaborate with the Meteorological Service of Catalonia and the UB to evaluate the quality of rainfall data since 1855, long before standardized measurements were taken at modern meteorological stations. The reliability of these data is key to understanding the effects of climate change in Catalonia.
