Researchers from the Computational Biology and Complex Systems group (BIOCOM-SC) of the UPC and the Center for Comparative Medicine and Bioimaging (CMCiB) of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), with the impulse of “la Caixa”, Developed a mathematical model to monitor the epidemic of COVID-19. The report they make for the European Union strategy office based on the model is updated daily and includes predictions for Catalonia, Spain and the European Union. The model also serves to analyze the effectiveness of the measures established in the different countries.

Researchers publish theoretical prediction of a new type of quantum liquid

Recently Grecia Guijarro has defended her PhD thesis under supervision of Jordi Boronat and Grigory Astrakharchik in the research group "Approaches to the first principles in condensed matter physics: quantum effects and complexity". The theoretical prediction of existence of a novel type of a quantum ultradilute liquid has been published in Physical Review Letters journal. It was found that dipolar interactions on their own are sufficient for creating an ultradilute quantum liquid in a bilayer geometry.

Yago Herrera defended his thesis co-directed by Glòria Sala and Jordi José on December 15 at the Diagonal-Besos Campus.
Titled "Models of stellar winds from X-ray bursts", the thesis presents a study on the possible ejection of mass through a stellar wind during X-ray bursts, quantifying its composition and possible contribution to galactic abundances, and characterizing observables magnitudes that can lead to better measuring techniques of neutron stars properties.

Adrià Casanovas Hoste defended his thesis, co-directed by Franciscño Calviño (UPC) and César Domingo (IFIC, Valencia), on 27 October at the ETSEIB. Titled "Neutron capture cross section measurement of the heaviest s-process branching 204Tl and of 203Tl at CERN n_TOF", the thesis presents the first ever measurement of the effective neutron capture section of the radioactive isotope of such 204Tl, of special relevance to the slow process of stellar nucleosynthesis, and performed in the CERN n_TOF experiment

Deimos Ibáñez Segura defended his thesis co-directed by Adrià Rovira Garcia and Jaume Sanz Subirana on October 23 at the North Campus. Titled "Contributions to multi-purpose GNSS positioning to support multi-frequency and multi-constellation with high accuracy and integrity", the thesis presents, on the one hand, different methods for GNSS processing (multi-constellation, multi-frequency, fast convergence, integrity and maritime applications), and on the other hand the study of different components that affect GNSS positioning (such as the ionosphere, errors in the signal in space). All the processing is furthermore integrated into a tool, gLAB, aimed at both professionals and students, which already has an international impact and with the improvements made in this thesis will significantly increase its impact.
