Enrique García and Manel Soria reproduce the formation of polar storms on Saturn
The work of researchers Enrique García and Manel Soria of the Department of Physics of the UPC, is part of an international scientific collaboration led by the researcher Agustín Sánchez Lavega, from the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU), which has discovered multiple storms at different latitudes of the second largest planet in the solar system and just published in the journal "Nature Astronomy"

David Pino coordinates the creation of the most complete catalog of floods in the peninsular Mediterranean slope over a thousand years
The 'MEDIFLOOD' project, coordinated by the department, has created the first archive that compiles, identifies and analyzes 14,500 cases of rain and river flooding in the Spanish Mediterranean watershed in a period of almost a millennium. The information provided by this catalog will allow to increase the forecast capacity of extreme weather events in order to design the most effective adaptation and response actions.

Researchers from the Physics Department and the IGTP evaluate the evolution of the epidemic by COVID-19 and the effectiveness of control measures, using mathematical models
Researchers from the Computational Biology and Complex Systems group (BIOCOM-SC) of the UPC and the Center for Comparative Medicine and Bioimaging (CMCiB) of the Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP), with the impulse of “la Caixa”, Developed a mathematical model to monitor the epidemic of COVID-19. The report they make for the European Union strategy office based on the model is updated daily and includes predictions for Catalonia, Spain and the European Union. The model also serves to analyze the effectiveness of the measures established in the different countries.

A new experimental and numerical investigation on the fatigue response of composite and metal aircraft structures

Researchers publish theoretical prediction of a new type of quantum liquid
Recently Grecia Guijarro has defended her PhD thesis under supervision of Jordi Boronat and Grigory Astrakharchik in the research group "Approaches to the first principles in condensed matter physics: quantum effects and complexity". The theoretical prediction of existence of a novel type of a quantum ultradilute liquid has been published in Physical Review Letters journal. It was found that dipolar interactions on their own are sufficient for creating an ultradilute quantum liquid in a bilayer geometry.

Roger Ayats defends his thesis on coherent structures in the transition to turbulence
En Roger Ayats defended his thesis co-directed by l’Alvaro Meseguer and Fernando Mellibovsky on April 22nd at Campus Nord. The thesis, which is entitled "Exact coherent structures in the transitional regime of shear and centrifugal flows", studies the transition mechanisms in shear and centrifugal flows by computing and analysing the role of exact coherent structures.

Yago Herrera defends his thesis about stellar winds from X-ray bursts
Yago Herrera defended his thesis co-directed by Glòria Sala and Jordi José on December 15 at the Diagonal-Besos Campus. Titled "Models of stellar winds from X-ray bursts", the thesis presents a study on the possible ejection of mass through a stellar wind during X-ray bursts, quantifying its composition and possible contribution to galactic abundances, and characterizing observables magnitudes that can lead to better measuring techniques of neutron stars properties.

Evidence of supersolid quantum phase using quantum Monte Carlo methods
Jordi Boronat, Director of the department of Physics, together with M. C. Gordillo from the University of Pablo de Olavide in Seville found evidences of of a supersolid quantum phase with hexatic correlations using quantum Monte Carlo methods.
